10/2/15

Oops, forgot to blog yesterday so a re-cap for 10/1/15:

Another day of fun on the water. Reading my book while listening to the wind whistle. My current book is a formula book - multiple stories of relationships, many of which are stupid and dishonest in their effort to be socialy correct; a crisis event that causes all the stories to intersect; looks as if many of the relationships that are stupid will be positively resolved, you know by divorce or deciding not to marry; and the potentially good relationships will take root and grow. Anyway a page turner which made me forget to blog.

A trip to town on the water taxi, rendezvous at the Louis' Oyster Bar with other "cruisers" who are waiting for weather. For my memory - Lynn & Scott from ME have bought a house in New Bern, NC; Larry & Shannon from Stockton Springs, ME first ICW trip like us; Mary Lou and her husband making third try for the Bahamas have gotten farther each try; young couple (the laundry boat because they were drying their laundry on te lifelines when we arrived, Kate and James, are making their first ICW trip in a new-to-them (3 months) boat; a Halifax couple, Sandy & ?; another couple who I didn't meet; Tom who mostly keeps moving on his boat w/vague home port in RI. A crtew.

David and I deflated and stowed the dinghy on the bow of Grace not expecting to take ourselves to shore in the 20-25 k. winds. Water taxi is very stable and operates all day if we want a trip off the boat. I learned that our oven is NOT calibrated to anything close to the numbers on the dial, burned the top of the brownies without cooking the center. We bought an oven themometer on our town trip.

Oops again. I forgot that David has something to say - take it David.

Hello All,
Nancy filled in about the other cruisers. My curent book is a Robert Heinlein futuristic fantasy (sci-fi) about an artificial person. The writing provides Heinlein the opportunity to explore racism, self-acceptance and as always, the behavior and effects of unethical corporate and world govenments.

And now on to the weather! Fortunately, as the European Forecast Model had first predicted, most computer models predict Hurricane Joaquin will turn to the east and not hit the East Coast of US. It is also likely to miss Bermuda as well. YES! Of course, computer models are not the Hurricane itself. We shall see what actually happens in the next few days.  Today, the northern part of Bahamas is being bitterly pounded as Joaquin slowly turns west, then north and will likely then track east. With few islands having much of any infrastructure to respond to the damage,  or elevation for people to seek shelter, it can be expected that there will be terrible damage and loss of life.

Here in well protected Port Washington, we are in the midst of a major coastal storm, with moderate winds (now at 20 - 25 expected to gust to 40) and rain. Many of our New England friends on land are being pounded with flooding and rain. Be safe.

We will watch the Hurricane, sit out the storm, and consider options early next week. Because the seas off NJ will still be significant into next week, we are discussing a short trip north on the Hudson River to explore while we wait for a favorable weather and sea condition window down NJ to Cape May. Still looking for an extra set of eyes to join us down the Jersey Coast.

  1. Sounds like a mooring is the right place to be with a hurricane passing. Best wishes for clearing weather.
